Training Your Puppy To Walk With You

A puppy isn't born automatically accustomed to walking by your side on a leash and collar. Puppies are used to being able to go where their attention calls them.
To a puppy it's a real shock to find someone pulling him short and stopping him in his tracks when he wants to go elsewhere. Below are some tips on how to train your puppy to walk with you:
Walk Briskly: When walking your puppy for the first time, be sure to move quickly. No need to run but don't let your dog slow you down either.
Leash Pop: Initially most puppies will pull away from you as their attention is called by the surrounding distractions. A quick tug of the leash, a leash pop, will signal your puppy in the direction he should be moving. Do not jerk him up by the leash or be too forceful on the tug that it injures his neck. It's just a quick pull and release motion.
Encourage: You want to teach your puppy that following by your side is an enjoyable activity. Build your pup's confidence with encouraging body language and vocal praise. Rewarding your puppy with a snack, cheering words or a pat will help send the message that walking by your side is a good thing.
As with any new activity or training, patience and consistency are the keys to a successful lesson. At Pet Supermarket, we have everything you'll need to ensure the best training results, from collars and leashes to toys and treats to foster your puppy's training.

Kitty Chatter
Traveling With Your Kitty

Taking your cat on a vacation or weekend getaway can be a great experience.

To help ensure that you and your kitty have a great time, keep in mind the following travel tips:
Plan Ahead: Before planning your itinerary, make sure your cat will be welcomed everywhere you plan to stop. This includes hotels, motels, campgrounds, restaurants and entertainment venues.
Update Shots: Avoid exposing your cat to more risks than necessary. Before you travel ensure that his shots are up-to-date.
Nametags: Make sure your kitty is wearing his id tags. The tags should include your name, address, phone number and if possible, veterinarian contact information.
Carriers: It's unsafe for you and your cat to let him wonder around the inside of a car freely. Your kitty will be much more comfortable and safe in his own carrier. If you plan to fly, there are many soft-sided carriers made for airplane under seat use. Check your airline for carrier guidelines.
Familiar Things: To help your kitty better adjust to the stress of travel; bring a supply of his regular food and water and any bedding and toys he may like.
By planning in advance and covering all the bases, you and your cat will have a great trip. At Pet Supermarket, we carry everything your kitty will need to travel, from approved carriers and beds, to grooming aids and treats. Visit us today!

3 Steps to Avoiding Aquarium Fish Illness

Taking the proper safety steps is the key to keeping your tank free of pathogens and parasites. Below are some of the most important steps you can take to protect your aquarium fish:
1.
Water Chemistry: Test for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates and pH frequently. Water changes are necessary to insure that all of these factors are in check and kept at safe and proper levels for your aquarium's population. Pet Supermarket carries a variety of at home test kits and we will gladly test your aquarium water at no charge in the store. We have a variety of products that help to maintain good water quality.
2.
Isolate New Fish: Any new fish should be placed in a "hospital" tank for a few days to watch for any infection. If something develops, you can treat the tank according to the medication package directions. Once the fish is deemed safe, it can be introduced to the main tank.
3.
Isolate Sick Fish: Any fish in the main tank that appears ill or injured should be isolated and treated immediately. By the time a fish is showing symptoms, it's already very sick and treatment is the key to its survival.
In the end, the best cure is always prevention. A clean tank, prompt removal of uneaten food and the isolation of sick fish are some of the best ways to maintain a healthy environment for your fish. At Pet Supermarket we have everything you'll need to keep your aquarium in top shape. Come in today!

Readers Feedback
Buddy
Our cat Buddy was adopted from a neighbor's family a few months ago. He was eating regular food so we were told, however his coat was bare on both sides of his body.

We went to Pet Supermarket with Buddy and they gave us Nutro's Natural Choice Complete Care cat food. Buddy's hair has grown back beautifully.

Thank you Pet Supermarket for your advice and knowing how to help us.

Pet Supermarket News

Various prepared pet food ingredients can trigger allergic or food-sensitivity reactions in dogs and cats. These include not only the expected list of chemical additives, preservatives and flavorings that offer no nutritional value whatsoever, but also many commonplace menu items that are known to be healthful dietary staples for most pets. Separating the helpful ingredients from the harmful is the key to sound pet nutrition and health.

So when your pet begins scratching his head long past flea and tick season, don't be left scratching your own in wonder. Consider their diet and whether there are some all-natural substitutions you should be making to keep them happy, healthy and well-fed.
Now available at Pet Supermarket, Wellness(R) Simple Food Solutions(R) are created for dogs who thrive on a limited ingredient diet. Choose from a complete line of new cans and dry dog formulas in mouth watering varieties such as Rice & Salmon, Rice and Lamb and Rice and Duck.
