The Benefits of a Raised Food Bowl

Elevating the dog's food dish from the floor can help improve his posture and digestion.

A raised feed bowl can specifically help your dog in the following ways:
Posture and Skeletal Stress: By raising the food and water bowls your dog will alleviate muscle, joint and bone stress caused by the bending of the neck to reach the food and water.
Air Intake: Taller dogs that have to bend their necks to eat from the floor level, tend to "gulp" lots of air with their food. Taking in too much air with each bite may lead to a condition know as Gastric Dilation Volvulus (GDV) or commonly known as bloat. Bloat may lead to cardiovascular and digestive system problems.
Proper Bowl Height: The ideal height for the food and water bowls should be just below the dog's chest. To be more specific, measure from the ground to the top of your dog's shoulder and then subtract six inches. This will give you the optimal height for the bowls.
Food and water bowl elevation is an important part of the overall digestive process for your dog. At Pet Supermarket, the health of your pet is our priority. We offer adjustable height feeders to accommodate any size dogs, as well as Feeders, Bowls, Toys and Treats.

How to Keep Your Cat Safe During the Holidays

The holidays are a time of cheer and bustle. As we plan parties, attend festivities, and open our homes to guests, it's easy to forget even the simplest safety precautions to help protect our feline friends. Keeping kitty safe during the holiday season is easy. Keep in mind the following precautions:
Plants: The popular Mistletoe and Poinsettias are holiday decoration favorites. If you plan to adorn your home with holiday plants, just keep them out of your cat's reach since they are toxic and may harm kitty.
Food: Holiday parties contain of plenty food, but what is delicious for us can be toxic for cats. Make sure foods that are toxic to cats such as tomatoes, green potatoes, chocolate, garlic, grapes, and raisins are kept sealed in containers. If your cat will be part of the party, it's important to let your guests know not to feed kitty. The safest environment for your cat during a party is in a separate room or secure carrier with his favorite toy.
Decorations: Holiday lights and electrical cords can be seen as the new toy to your cat. Kitty may be tempted to chew or pull on the lights. Protect him from an injury by taping hanging cords together or enclosing them in plastic tubing.
The holidays are about enjoying ourselves in the company of our loved ones and our pets. At Pet Supermarket we carry everything your kitty may need to make this a special occasion. Check out our beds, carriers, trees, scratch posts, toys and treats for holiday gifts. Come in or shop online!

Common Dangers for Birds during the Holidays

The holidays present special safety challenges to bird owners. It is important to keep your birdie safe and stress free. Below is a list of the most common dangers for birds during the holiday season:
Christmas tree: If you let your bird loose in the house, he will naturally flock to the Christmas tree. A decorated tree may include tinsel and artificial snow that can be toxic to birds. Christmas trees are also adorned with lights that can become hot and cause burns. Remember to keep your bird away from the Christmas tree.
Holiday Plants: Poinsettia, Holly, Mistletoe and other plants commonly used to decorate during the holidays can be toxic to birds and other pets.
Fire: If you are going to light candles or start a fireplace, remember to keep your bird in his cage, away from open flames that can pose a danger.
Decorations: Tying ribbons or bows to decorate a bird's cage can be dangerous since the bird may become entangled or tempted to pick at the decorations. Most ribbons and bows contain inks and metals that can be toxic.
The safest place for your birdie during the holiday parties is in its cage. At Pet Supermarket, we want our customer and their pets to be safe. Do you have something special in mind for your birdie? See our selection of Toys and Cage Accessories online or at our stores.
