September 2006 . N1
Dear Neighbors:

It is said that humans have a basic need to connect, and that is the reason Neighbors 4 Neighbors was created 14 years ago after Hurricane Andrew. Now, electronic technology allows us to send you our eNewsletter, "Cause An Effect" with important links to information and opportunities where you can make a difference.

As is our mission, we will use our eNewsletter to connect those in need with those who can help. When we profile a need or an organization, you can click; go directly to their site and offer assistance immediately. Our purpose is to help you better understand our community's needs and inspire you to get involved. (Click here to see the organizations your Katrina donations supported last year and learn more about their work).

Each month, we're going to give you important links and information. This month focuses on helpful hurricane websites. Hurricane Season 2006.

We will also profile an individual or group who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to help someone. To nominate a "Good Neighbor" click here.

Neighbors 4 Neighbors is committed to connecting our community one good deed at a time, and with your help we can make it happen. So please read on, respond and "Cause an Effect!"

Please feel free to forward "Cause An Effect" to people you think would be interested.

Kind Regards,

Lynne Cameron

Organization: Miami-Dade: Lutheran Services Florida

Background: Lutheran Services Florida has had an unprecedented year in providing affordable housing to the most vulnerable of our community. The majority of the organization's clients are families with children who are finding it difficult to cope with the high cost of living in Miami-Dade County. The CHANCE (Children Having a New Choice Everyday) program has provided opportunities for more than 140 families and 12 individuals to move into permanent, non-subsidized housing. Those impacted by Hurricane Wilma and Katrina have also benefited from these services as more than 25 families were relocated and many more have case workers helping them reconstruct their lives and advocate for them during the recovery process.

Needs: Backpacks full of supplies for children and teens, school uniforms no longer used by your child, and furniture donations with flexibility in picking up. If you can help or need more information on LSF programs please go to www.lsfnet.org or contact Beth Von Werne at bvonwerne@lsfnet.org.

Organization: Broward: Neighbors To The Rescue

Background: The Neighbors to the Rescue Program, as managed by Volunteer Broward, is the culmination of many different forces coming together to help hurricane victims: volunteers, donated goods, and a community coming together.

Needs: The Neighbors to the Rescue program accepts volunteers and donations of goods, services and cash in order to help hurricane victims get to the final step in disaster recovery. For more information, contact Audra Vaz at (954) 522-6761, audra@volbrow.org or visit Neighbors to the Rescue.

Ronnie Hart - An Inspiration

Background: We first met Ronnie Hart in June 2000 shortly after he overcame a fatal diagnosis of bacterial meningitis. Ronnie was just nine years old and doctors were forced to amputate both his legs and six fingertips due to a widespread infection. Six years later, Ronnie is now a healthy 14-year-old boy that has fought against all odds to emerge victorious. He attends Miami Lakes Middle School and will be trying out for his school's basketball team, despite having prosthetic legs. He also dreams of going to DASH Magnet School to pursue his dream of becoming an architect and is an excellent artist despite having lost all fingertips in his right hand.

Needs: Ronnie is in need of athletic prosthetic legs to make his basketball dreams come true and a computer for school. If you think you can help Ronnie, e-mail Neighbors 4 Neighbors or call
305-597-4404.

Power To Make A Difference
By Chuck Malkus

"Power" as defined on www.dictionary.com:

"Ability to do or act; capability of doing or accomplishing something"

Today, more and more people are discovering how easy it is to exercise power by becoming involved with Neighbors 4 Neighbors and helping others. Whether it's someone facing hurricane conditions or hearing about someone who has fallen upon adverse circumstances, it is easy for you to lend a hand.

Neighbors began in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew in 1992 as a relief project of the local CBS Station. The phone bank opened at the Fort Lauderdale Jaycees Clubhouse from where it was broadcast live throughout South Florida. We worked in partnerships with the Jaycees and other organizations.

I had the pleasure of being a part of Neighbors from the beginning and have witnessed its evolution into a complete social services agency. We continue to respond to those in need with the same sense of urgency and resolve that we had in our early days.

We have grown stronger with you and learned that the power to make a difference can be shared among family and friends for the betterment of many causes. Please see our website to learn more about Special Programs such as Adopt-A-Family 4 The Holidays.

We've learned a lot during the past 14 years. We've gained the knowledge that there is power when people come together in numbers, small or large, and combine resources for many Neighbors programs. Families are able to connect with other families. Businesses are rallying employees to make life easier for others who are less fortunate.

Let me know of your thoughts and experiences. Thank you for your involvement.
