January 2007 - No. 5
Dear Neighbors:

Happy New Year and thanks for your generosity this holiday season. Our Adopt-A-Family 4 the Holidays 2006 program was a huge success.

January is National Mentoring Month. The word "mentoring" can be intimidating to a busy person, but we'd like to show you many ways you can mentor. Check out our Mentoring page and see that it isn't always about money. Your expertise and knowledge could help someone start a business, introduce a child to the arts, or help a teen transition from foster care to independence. I hope you'll give it a try.

Untied States Coast Guard Miami
and their adopted family
The Neighbors 4 Neighbors Adopt-A-Family 4 the Holidays 2006 program was a huge success! Our staff is currently finalizing our reports, but initial counts show:
Nearly 150 adopters, which included individuals, families, schools, and entire companies.
Nearly 1,000 people adopted through phase one of Adopt-A-Family, where our adopters "adopt" a family for the holidays.
Over 6,000 toys and nearly $9,000 in gift cards and monetary donations collected for Operation Elf, phase two of Adopt-A-Family, which makes sure unadopted families receive gifts.
Over 500 people served through Operation Elf.
The Souper Bowl of Caring is a nationwide, grassroots movement of caring that uses Super Bowl weekend to mobilize youth to fight against hunger in their local communities. It works because you get involved. As a Souper Bowl of Caring participant, you are demonstrating your belief in the power of young people to make a difference in the lives of others.

Organization: Miami's Police Athletic League

Background:
The Police Athletic League (PAL) is a recreation-oriented, juvenile crime prevention program that relies heavily on athletics and recreational activities to tighten the bond between police officers and kids in the community.

Police teach values through sports
Faced with financial woes, the nonprofit program affiliated with the Miami police department has had to close down four of their sites and has reduced the number of kids they serve from 500 to 150 in just two years.

Neighbors 4 Neighbors is a non-profit organization 501(c) 3, originally created by CBS4 in 1992 in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew. As South Florida recovered, CBS4 made a commitment to make Neighbors an integral part of its community service program. Using the power of television to reach people who want to help and by forging relationships with important community and business leaders, Neighbors has evolved into a valuable resource for individuals and families in our community facing critical needs.
