Dear Fellow Engineers:

William K. Francis, PE
FES Broward, President
How Did I Get Here and Who Is Behind Me?

During the holiday season, many of you, as I do, reflect on the past year and think about what we've accomplished. Whether it's celebrating with friends or family, or the sentimental and emotional environment that this time of year creates, a new year brings thoughts of an ending, but also a new beginning. There are always the standard resolutions: "I'll go to the gym more", "I'll make more time for my family", or "I'll get more involved with FES".

However, I tend to look at the past year to establish my goals for the coming year. This makes sense since, as engineers, we spend an inordinate amount of time planning, collecting data, analyzing, and attending meetings, as compared to the time we spend creating the actual direction and solution to a problem.
As President this term, we have a strong focus on growing future engineers and our educational programs. My reflection extends beyond the past year, and is geared towards how I got where I am--not geographically or financially, but professionally and personally. I had the distinct advantage, unlike many kids today, of knowing what career I wanted at an early age. Ironically, it's not what I'm registered to practice as today.

So what happened? Well, I can narrow down a few specific influences and factors for me, but I'm sure that everyone's career path has been blazed differently. Perhaps it was the energetic high school math teacher, the erector set, Lego blocks, or chemistry kit you got when you were a child that inspired you; maybe it was a college administrator, or even a television show. While these influences can't necessarily dictate your career choice, they can allow you to find what interests you and makes you happy. I can't speak for all, but I am happy with my choice.

This is where we as engineers come into play with the younger generation of kids, those that will replace us when we no longer are practicing. We're not recruiters at this point; we probably shouldn't expect a high school student, let alone a middle school student, to know exactly what they want to do in life. But we can be that influence that helps them find what they excel at and enjoy.

As such, I've made this one of my resolutions for the coming year. And I'm asking you to join me in making this one of FES Broward's resolutions for the coming year. There are numerous K-12 school events and programs that we'll be sponsoring and participating in this year. These events will provide the opportunity for us to share our experience and knowledge with the kids that may follow us in years to come.

I wish all of you and your families a Happy Holiday and hope to see you at our joint Holiday Party with ASCE!!!
