The Many Faces of Hunger
When we think of poverty and hunger, what is often the first image that comes into our minds? The children, of course. We've all seen the images of poverty-stricken, hungry children from all over the world; but we don't need to travel the world, they are right here in South Florida with over 295,000 children living in poverty. And child poverty and hunger is indeed a very serious problem.
The Hidden Costs of Child Hunger
According to statistics from the Children's Defense Fund, every year a child spends growing up in poverty will cost an estimated $11,800 in lost future productivity over his or her working life. Conversely, every $1 invested in early childhood care saves as much as $7 later on by increasing the likelihood that children will be literate, employed, and enrolled in post-secondary education. And obviously, the first and most basic need in the care of these children is food.
Other Faces of Hunger
However, children aren't the only ones who suffer from poverty and hunger. Think about the elderly; how many are home-bound, perhaps ill or bed-ridden, with no family or support system and no access to food? With all the advances in medical science, people may be living longer, but not necessarily better. How many elderly people have to choose between shelter, medications, or food?

And, as we all know, for many Americans, wages have simply not kept up with the cost of living, and food has become an unaffordable luxury. Of the people seeking emergency food relief, more than one in three had to choose between paying rent and buying groceries. All too often, they can't afford even the most basic of necessities-food.

A smile only a full belly can give.

Then there are the homeless, the mentally and physically challenged, battered women, people living with HIV and victims of natural disasters.South Florida has a multi-faceted, many-sided problem with hunger among its residents.
The Empowerment of Daily Bread Food Bank
This is where the Daily Bread Food Bank comes in. We provide food not only for needy children, but for those who sometimes fall through the cracks and can't be counted: the elderly, working poor, the homeless, and the mentally or physically ill. We provide food for organizations to help improve the lives of those less fortunate. Daily Bread strives to feed all people with faces of hunger.

Chef Allen Susser
"I find it is as rewarding and fulfilling to help and give back to the community as it is to see a smile of joy on a customer's face who is enjoying a perfectly cooked fish from my stove top. This balance has become an important way of life for me.

Over the past 20 years, I have been fortunate enough to have worked with many talented chefs. Share Our Strength is an innovative and progressive culture that continues to motivate Miami's chefs. Food is our business, our art, and our life. We must be the leaders in the fight against hunger. Even more specific, by fighting childhood hunger we want to create the first hunger free generation."
Chef Allen Susser, Chairman Miami SOS.
